5 year old son with PDD-NOS

I have a five year old with PDD-NOS and am new to this board. My son was diagnosed last fall. We had been struggling with behavior issues and he had a rough time in prek. I had been trying to put my finger on exactly what was going on with him for years. Even though I have a special ed degree, I really didn't see this one. My husband and I thought ODD or ADHD, but nothing in the AU spectrum. He's so social and verbal! Once the psych told us, I was like "Oh, that makes some behaviors make some sense"...My husband, however, has disagreed with the diagnoses and that has been very frustrating.
I met with his pedi today about ADHD testing and brought him along. She got to see first hand some of the hyper/impulsive behaviors we are concerned with. She said she thinks he may have ADD, but PDD looks valid. She also said retesting/second opinion is warranted now that it's been almost a year since his testing.
My husband likes his pedi and seemed to take in her opinion. I just want to get him the help he needs and figure some of this out before he starts kinder in the fall!
Anyone else with ADHD/PDD?

Thanks for your reply, Heather. I just really want to get him the right treatment and be more sure before really considering meds. My husband will be even harder to convince. The psych also dx'd our son with mood disorder NOS. She feels this is behind all of his impulsive/ hyperactive behavior, but I don't agree. I stay home with him and have been teaching him at home this year instead of a second year of prek. I know he needs some meds or something to help him be successful. We pulled him from OT b/c the therapist spent the majority of her time redirecting and trying to get him to focus. We'll get all sorted out soon... -Jeni

Welcome to the board!

My understanding is that ADHD is so frequently co-morbid with ASD that it's considered part and parcel with the ASD dx. The ASD dx implies that it could be present. That being said, it's often given as a misdiagnosis for high-functioning ASD kids - as is ODD.

It can be very difficult to dx high functioning ASD kids, so your experience here is all too common. High functioning ASD kids are often social and loving, but they still struggle with the non-verbal and implied social signals that the NT world uses to regulate social interaction.

Your DH's reaction is all to common too. Mothers are often the first to suspect that something is off and are usually quicker to accept an dx. My bias, but I think we're quicker to move on to the 'do something' stage.

This section of the board often is overlooked, so feel free to post in the top section, which gets more action. You can ask questions, share, vent, whine or post anything you feel like. We're a pretty non-judgemental crowd. Hope you find the board as supportive and useful as I do.
