I was interested in seeing your post because my 11 year old son was recently diagnosed with PDD-NOS. He had been diagnosed with ADD in second grade, but we just kept feeling that there was something more at issue. Can I ask how it's been going for you? Our son was just hospitalized for making suicidal statements and having severe episodes of getting "stuck" at school. We are heartbroken and depressed and don't know anyone else in this situation. Our son is a beautiful boy and a great kid--I just feel that life is going to be such a struggle for him. We want to get connected to other people who are either experiencing this as well, or who have teenagers with the diagnosis so we can know what we can possibly expect in the future.
Welcome to the board! or should I say Welcome out of lurkdom!?
I've a DS about the same age as yours and we are in the throes of planning the transition to middle school for him. We've not had to contend with giftedness however. As pp noted, quite often high functioning ASD kids manage well during elementary school but run into issues once they hit middle school. I would definitely take your school up on an IEP and any supports that they can give him.
Our DS sees a social worker for working on social skills and dealing with his frustration. It started out as play therapy when he was 3, I've got no idea what they do now, lol! But it might be something to look into for your DS since middle school is so fraught with feelings and angst.
Hope to get to know you better over time.
