Hi All,
My name is Carol. I have a son, Matt who is 4.5 years old. He was diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome and PDD/NOS in July 2005. Matt has huge sensory issues but has not been formally tested for them. They tell me that they won't test him until he is at least 6. Matt started preschool last April. I am so pleased with the progress he has made. However, this school year he is having difficulties in the classroom. I was working full-time at nights and recently just went back to part time work so that I could spend more time with Matt. He's so bright and happy but a little imp..getting into things he shouldn't be..a daredevil..to say the least. He is so quick and quiet that I can turn my back for literally 15 seconds and he has hurt himself, falling, bumping into something...everyday is an adventure. He has meltdowns at school, getting off the bus, if the weather is not right. Somedays I feel like pulling my hair out. He is a sweet little boy, who is very loving and caring, and so sensitive. Everyday he does/says something else that amazes me. Recently, he started telling military time..where he picked that up is beyond me. My husband said he never taught him. He reads on a 5th grade level if not higher and comprehends about 60% of what he reads...provided the questions about the material is in written form. Verbally he is above average, however he does not participate in reciprocal speech..very normal with AS kids, or so I'm told. He has a photographic memory, which is so amazing to me. I do have to say it saved my butt at Thanksgiving time as I had lost a recipe for a traditional family stuffing. I thank God everyday for bringing Matthew into my life. Although he has issues, he is an otherwise healthy happy boy. I'm very happy to have found others who share what I'm going thru...Thanks to all of you for letting me ramble..
Welcome! It sounds like you have a wonderful little boy.Look forward to getting to know you.
Teresa
Thanks for the welcome. It's nice to know there are other Moms out there who are going through the same thing. (not that it's nice that our angels will struggle, but it's nice that we can all be here to support one another)
Have a great day!
Carol
Hi Carol,
I'm Michelle and my son, Nathan, was dx'd at the same age Matt was dx'd. Nathan is HFA with sensory and anxiety issues as well. He will be 7 this month and is attending a regular 1st grade class. He gets pulled out of class alot, but this really helps him and he doesn't mind it at all. He has an aid that helps him too. He receives speech and attends a social skills class at school. And also gets extra help with math and reading.
Nathan was delayed in speech and he's rather quiet most of the time. He still tantrums when he's upset or stressed. But for the most part, we spend our time trying to keep Nathan connected and interacting. He prefers to be alone, thinking and obsessing.
Matt sounds like he's quite a handful. But I know what you mean about how loving and sweet our kids can be....Nathan is the same way! BTW, Nathan gets upset about the weather too! Glad to have you here. It's a great board for support and to share stories!

Hi Michelle,
Thanks for the welcome!

Hi Carol,
Welcome to our crew!
Hi Carol,
Welcome aboard!
I have a 4.5 year old DS (born 6-23-01), Jack, who is PDD-NOS.... He is as sweet as the day is long. He has big sensory int. dysfunction, which has improved slightly. He doesn't talk much, except to request things that he wants... but we're pushing hard on that.
Glad to have you!
Cathy
P.S. You have two others? So do I...both girls (ages 7 and almost 2!)
Cathy,
Thanks for the welcome...Matt was born 6-20-01, so Jack and Matt are very close in age. I have a typical daughter Abigail who is 6, a step son who is 12 (ADHD), and a son who was still born in 1998. Matt has alot of sensory issues too. Some are getting better, some we can't seem to blow by.
