I think this is where I belong.

Greetings, fellow parents of kids with PDDs. My DS Justus, who will be five in December, was diagnosed a year and-a-half ago with PDD-NOS. Since September, we've been facing another potential diagnosis of neurofibromatosis (anyone hear about that one?). While researching NF on the Web, I came across a great site with a bulletin board and chat room. It has been so helpful to me that I thought I'd search out one regarding pervasive developmental disorders. I made a couple of posts on the autism board yesterday, but felt guilty that my son was verbal and higher-functioning. I didn't want to take away from the accomplishments of other people's children. So when I saw other parents of verbal kids here, I figured this is where I should visit.

I'm a 30-y-o SAHM with two kids -- Justus, and DD Noelle (2). My DH of 8 years is Pete. We live in Waukesha, WI, near Milwaukee. Justus currently receives ABA therapy 26 hrs/wk at home, plus attends an early childhood program through the school district 10 hrs/wk. He receives SDPE (specially-designed physical education), some speech, and limited OT through the school district. He attends our Sunday church classes with his peer group with the help of a line therapist. On most planes, he functions at a 2-1/2 y/o level, with his biggest hindrance being receptive and expressive speech. He has aggressive behaviors like hitting and head-butting, but can also be very affectionate and loves to hug and cuddle. He's been totally toilet trained since March (yeah!), which was an enormous relief. We found the book "1-2-3 Magic" to be super effective in discipline issues.

So that's us! I'm grateful to Candes for leading this group and to all of you moms (and dads) who keep loving these kids and reaching out to others. God bless!

Welcome to the board!! I am Carrie, sahm to Hollyann(6yo, NT, kindergarten) and Tristan(7yo, PDD-NOS, ADHD, (unofficial dx)bipolar, left side sensorineural hearing loss), and Navy wife to hubby for 9yrs (he's been Navy for 8.5yrs). We currently live in Upstate NY where Tristan is in 2nd grade, mainstreamed, with a phenomenal CSE team! At school, he receives speech therapy 3X's/week, and a teacher of the hearing impaired twice/week. Academically, he's superb! Behaviourly......wuuuummmm.....we're working on it! lol

Recently, Tristan started with Cub Scouts - had his first meeting last week with his Wolf Den. Both hubby and I, as well as our psych. and our therapist, feel that this is going to be THE best thing for Tristan. For all of us, really! He finally seems to have found a spot where he enjoys what he is doing, and where he fits in. I was so happy listening to him after that first meeting that I was in total tears with pride and joy!!

About me personally....like I said, I am a SAHM and Navy wife, as well as a stand-in Room Parent when I am needed, community volunteer for different things, and Co-Leader of my daughter's Daisy Girl Scout troop. Oh...and most likely soon-to-be a Women's Auxilliary member of the local American Legion (my hubby is already a member). Busy, busy, busy I am...but I make sure to not overdo myself. I may have many commitments, but I make sure and keep them spaced apart to allow for some down time --- and hubby and Tristan are always the first ones to tell me when I am doing too much!! ROFL

Well, no more time left for me, I must be getting to the bus stop. Have a great weekend, and again.....welcome to the board!!!

My Dh's name is Craig(AS) and I quote him often.

Hi, welcome to the board. I'm an R.N. & have heard of Neurofibromatosis but don't see much of it in the ambulatory setting where I work. I'm sure your local Children's Hosp. Neurology dept. can provide you with lots of info. My dd is 11 with add/asperger's. I work part-time have another dd who is 14 & a dh. Keep posting, everyone here is nice & supportive. I, my name is Siobhain (Just like Paula's daughter, I just have an extra "i"). I am the proud mother of two wonderful children, Liam (6,CAPD, ADD, dyslexic, visual processing issues, and SID), and Linnane (4, NT). Although Liam isn't on the spectrum, due to his co-morbids, he has a very similar social component. So, I face a lot of the same issues. It is very nice to meet you!
