My dog died

I feel so silly about this, but we had to put our dear old dog that we have had for 10 years to sleep and I am boo hooing all over the place. It wasn't unexpected, but it is still sad and I miss Jake so much. I miss him in the morning, I miss him laying in the kitched when I cook. I always think I'm going to see him coming around the corner wagging his tail.

Shirley MacLaine once said when she got a dog she realized men were over-rated. I love my DH, but I kind of know how she feels! I realize now how much I really needed Jake's unconditional love.

Well, my other problem is that DS hasn't noticed yet Jake is gone. We did it when he was at school on Monday. I got a nice children's book call "I remember" about a boy remembering the fun things he did with his dog. The dog's name is even Jake, like ours, and black, like ours.

I guess I'll just wait until DS brings it up, but I find it really strange he hasn't noticed it. On the other hand, I don't want him to suddenly realize a lot later and feel we kept something from him, although I don't think he could understand anything like that. I also don't know that he will understand the concept of death either.

Anyway, mostly I am just sad.

Thank you, LR. That really touched me and made me cry again too.

That is so difficult. We had to put one of our cats to sleep about 18mos ago, and it took awhile for it to sink in with my kids. They would say things like "Kendra died, but she will come home soon" It took a long time for them to 'get' that she wasn't coming home. They weren't hugely saddened by her absence; they just kind of accepted that she wasn't around anymore and got on with things.

It took a long time for me to get it too. I know exactly what you mean about expecting to see Jake, or "forgetting" he won't be there. He was such a part of your life for so long, that it takes the brain awhile to adjust.

It takes the heart even longer, but peace will come.

I am so sorry about Jake. We have a dog that is 13 and lately he is starting to look older. I know his time is coming sooner rather than later. He was our first baby and is a wonderful dog. It will be hard so I understand.

I bet your DS has noticed in some way. Perhaps it hasn't dawned on him why Jake isn't there so he hasn't asked. But it is hard to know how to help them through. For a while I never thought Cait would be sad about this sort of thing and I don't think until recently she would have. It just didn't affect her, but a couple weeks ago she did cry about a dog passing. It was the first time she really did. Perhaps ds will be protected from the sadness by his age.

Dear Katherine,

Yes, you need to grieve the loss of your dear friend, and while it is hard, it is only an indication of the strength of your bond and love that you are in such pain. ((((HUGS))))

Malcolm has had a mouse, the death of which phased him not at all, as he was not too attached, also that mouse hung around over a year longer than expected. However, the passing of some of his friends' beloved pets, animals he really loved, was harder for him. We bought him the children's books "Cat Heaven" and "Dog Heaven" when he was younger. He enjoyed them and I do think it helped his transition with their deaths to think of the animals as happy, no longer in pain, doing their favorite activities with energy and gusto and waiting for the humans to come to heaven someday.

Thank you everyone so much. Your love and concern make me feel better.

It's just been a bad week, lots of reasons, and that makes me miss my loving little Jake all the more. Thank you again for caring so much.
