Hello Christina and welcome,

I don't know what kind of psychologist you are going to see so I am not sure what she will do during the appointment.

We have taken our children for neuropsychologist evaluations. Usually it involves filling out a lot of forms and background information beforehand (pregnancy history, the age certain developmental milestones were hit, list my concerns and the teacher's concerns etc).

The psychologist should run a series of tests on your child, depending on the age. There may be puzzles, word games and direct questions. Two hours sounds kind of short to me for a full evaluation, but I am not sure if the goal of this appointment is to evaluate Jamie, or to assess if there are grounds for a more detailed evaluation.

Some insurance will cover therapy and some will not. Many of us seek evaluations and diagnoses to assist our children in school where they may be struggling.

However you don't need a diagnosis to seek help through the school district (kids become elegible for district help at 3). You can write and ask for the district

Hi and welcome Christina

Paula summed up ALOT of what to expect. This is a tricky process for this begining and getting offically dx'd. Getting the eval is a wise choice cause it's a definative "what's up with my kid" answer.

I have been on this board almost 2 yrs now. My son is 4 and has PDD which is also on the spectrum. He gets early intervention thru his preschool and cause of the state I live in (PA) we get what is called wrap around services which allows an aide in my home 10hrs a week and it's helped me a ton.

We have to get evals done every 3 months to continue wrap around--dx never changed but that could change later. We also get out patient speech and had OT but my son tested out after a year---goal!!!! We have a MA card that picks up what our HMO doesn't---thank God.

Hope to see/hear ya around some time. Don't be shy or be afraid to ask for advise.
