Hello All
My name is Mellissa and my six year old son Ian-Michael has been diagnosed with PDD/NOS and possible Aperger's Syndrome since 2003. He also suffers from a full facial palsy and has, as of late, begun to have mobility difficulties. We have been informed there is a possibility that he has scoliosis, although this diagnosis in no way explains the facial palsy. Obviously we're dealing with other issues than this board deals with but I'm so happy to have found a place to come seek some support.

Hi Mellissa. I don't post very often but I'm Jill. I have a 10 year old daughter, Haley who was diagnosed with Asperger's and General Anxiety in 2006. She was in a special ed classroom for the first semester of the last school year but is successfully mainstreamed now with a detailed IEP. I'm glad to hear your son is doing well in school now.
I would be very hesitant about allowing them to move him into a higher grade as well. I generally find that to be a very big mistake for most kids. When I was in first grade, my school wanted to move me into fourth but my mom wouldn't allow it because she felt that while I might have been able to handle it academically, I wouldn't have been able to handle it socially. To this day, I am grateful that she didn't allow me to advance. It would have made me miserable.

First of all, Welcome. These ladies are SO awesome. Just out of curiosity. I noticed in your pics that your SO was in uniform. Are you guys military in TN, or Guard? Reason I ask is we're stationed at Fort Campbell, and so I've learned a few tricks around this area in getting help for my 11 year old son with Asperger's / Anxiety. Victor has been tested twice for his IQ, once he tested 150 and the next time he tested 170. I know he would thrive intellectually in 8th or 9th grade instead of 6th but socially, he still thinks like an eight year old. We were stationed in a bad area and the kids in his own grade were cruel. I thought moving would stop the teasing and it has slowed, but there are still mean kids out there. Instead of moving Victor grade levels, we set it up so he was teacher's helper. He would get "special" projects that would help challenge him without overwhelming him. It took me and the teacher working closely together in 2nd and 3rd grade to get him thru those grades. In 4th grade, he had an awesome teacher that allowed the children to all move at their own pace. Look at his social behavioral level, his anxiety levels, and his ability to cope with new situations, weigh all of this and then make your decision if it's right for him. In our case, it was not good for Victor to be advanced. After debating the topics, you might decide that it will be helpful for Ian-Michael. If you want some more specific info on being in the military and autism/asperger's
