Hi Everyone,

My son Daniel was recently diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome. He is 7 years old and in grade two. I shared my doctors finding with his school. We have also been in contact with Geneva Center for Autism. Daniel is very hyper focused and has trouble taking social cues. Not sure where to really start with all of this. Any advice would be appreciated.

Hi Julia and welcome,

I'm glad that you found this board. It is a great place for support and knowledge. Please pull up a comfy chair and help yourself to nutty coffy and cookies.

Thank you so much Paula for the warm welcome. You know I thought I was ready to see it on paper but am feeling kinda sad now. My gut has always told me that something was going on. I read so much about Aspergers and was sure Daniel had it...not sure why I am now not dealing very well with it. I am praying that I will be that strong mom that can help figure out what to do to help him along. It is hard sometimes isn't it.

Julia,

I was exactly the same when Peter was DXed. I had known for years, and if he hadn't been diagnosed I would have escalated up the ladder. But he was, and for some reason I felt like I had been kicked in the teeth.

I discovered on this board that is is not unusual to feel this way. I think a part of you always *hopes* you are wrong, and it kind of hurts to have that last feeble

Hi, I am pretty new here too. So far this board and "Special education plans," board seem super helpful and everyone is very friendly. We are just starting the whole process too, right now my biggest issue is getting through each day at school.

Hope to "see" you around

Welcome Julia. My DD Stephanie was also dx at age 7. She is 9 now. She is homeschooled and she has been off and on with OT for some time. We are starting speech therapy shortly. I am sure that will help a great deal.

That's great you got in contact with Geneva. I am sure they will help. I should try that also.

It is overwhelming and upsetting. Give it time. We just take it one step at a time and sometimes don't know what to do. But we have lots of support. The speech therapy is supposed to help Stephanie with social clues. So, we will just see what happens. We read all we can subject.

((((hugs))))Join right in. We are all here for you.

Thank you so much everyone for your warm welcome. It has been a tough last few days but I am starting to feel better. I know that I have to accept what is going on and be strong for Daniel. It is important that he know that I think he is wonderful just the way he is. I look forward to getting to know everyone. It is nice that there is a place where people understand and do not judge. Thanks for allowing me to be part of your community and also lending a shoulder for me to lean on.

Hi Julia,

My second ds(4) was hust dx with Asperger's this week, so I am kind of going through all the grieving again, although it is a little easier this time.

No great advice, just feel free to come here and vent, cry, laugh and drink copious amounts of cyber wine;)
