Not really sure why your ped changed the dx to Asperger's, particularly if he still doesn't have good language skills. It is really a gray area and different docs with diagnose different things. In your case however, autism typically does make getting support services easier and he definitely needs that.

What kind of services is he getting? Is he in a preschool program? There are so many types of treatments for ASD kids and it really depends on their individual needs what treatments they should get. However, it is recomended by the National Association of Sciences that young children with autism (and all autism spectrum disorders) get at least 25 hours per week of some sort of intensive intervention. What that is can vary and even be things you are doing at home, but it much be individualized in a way that works for him that he is learning, not just sitting nearby but in his "own world" or not engaged IYKWIM.

Jennifer,

Hi. I have to agree with Renee about the talking aspect of it. I always understood that Aspie kids talk early and have a good vocabularly (although not always appropriate). Maybe your doctor knows something I don't. I'm certainly not an expert, although I wish at times I were!

The first clues of Asperger's we got with Alex (when he was about 3 1/2) was the lack of eye contact, obsessive interest in one subject (cars), delayed motor skills, and echolalia. Of course, every child is so different.

Well, I'm not much on advice, but just wanted to say welcome. And BTW, I noticed from your post that you and your DH were married exactly one week after my DH and I! A lucky 13 years! :-)

Jennifer,

Oops, I just noticed that you were married in '03, not '93! Sorry. Well, our anniversary dates are a week apart anyway! :-)
