New here, introducing myself....

Hi all,
My name is Irene and I just recently discovered this wonderful site! I'm so excited to know there'a a place where there are people who share a similar experience as mine. I like all the information and positive attitudes here, and I know I need to change some of my attitudes about my 8 y.o. ds. He has already been Dx as ADHD, and as "at risk" for Asperger's through his school (after much struggle and resistence from the school). Now, I'm having him evaluated by an outside shrink because I really believe he does have it. He's very bright and sweet, but I don't feel all his needs are being met under the current diagnosis.

Just over the past week or so, he has been to the Principal's office twice and today, he was at the school shrink's office. He has a very hard time controlling his anger when something sets him off and I never know what will do it. I try to stay one step ahead of him by trying to arrange his life just so, in hopes of preventing unwanted behaviors, but there are infinite possiblities and I can't seem to be able to predict what the future holds! ;)

Anyway, I'm doing my best and I'm hoping to find support on this board and that I can learn some "tricks of the trade" from the experienced members.

Looking forward to getting to know you....
Irene :)

Hello Irene, nice to meet you.
My son Adam 3 1/2 is who brings me here. I have been dx'd for a year now with PDD. We have a speech delay and he gets speech, OT, and play group 3x per week. Add in a special ed preschool 3x per week, in a nut shell I am a busy MOMMA. But you know what, he is doing great!!!! In the process of getting inhome behavioral therepy again---problems with transtions and staying on task is an issue, but he does OK for the most part.

We live in PA and are on the fence on having another child. I want one so badly, I miscarried back in January. I am doing better now.

I am a SAHM too. I have been married for 7 yrs this year.

Hope to see you around.

Just wanted to add my welcome to the others. My son Tom is almost 5 and right now we are dealing with self-regulation issues with anger and frustration. Behaviors are the hardest things to figure out and deal with I think. But I do know that even in just the last few months that we've really been addressing it, his behaviors have improved (he attends a developmental preschool for ASD kids right now and they've been a huge help).

I think getting an outside diagnosis is a great idea for you and for Daniel. I hope that it opens the doors meet his needs and help you too.

I'm new here too and I think this is a great place. Glad you found it too.

Thanks so much for your response. I also have had the school tell me that an autism label would follow my son around. I doubt he's going to run for political office, so what's the problem? We've been paying out of pocket for Occupational Therapy for about two years now (at $95.00/week)! It has helped a lot, but it's not nearly enough. The shrinks I saw today (through my insurance, luckily) informed me that an autism diagnosis would mean a lot more services and support. I told them I just want the truth. I just want to knwo for sure what my son has and if he does have Asperger's, then so be it.

I think it'll take a while to find out, but I think I already know the answer, you know what I mean? Every night, all I can do is research on this subject. I know it's a little obsessive, but it has armed with the powerful tool of information. I feel I'm going to be much more prepared for the next IEP meeting.

There has been so much pressure at school (to alter his behavior), that I've been thinking about homeschooling. I belive this to be a bad idea for Daniel because he truly loves school right now, and for that, I'm greatful. If that should change, my decision will be a lot easier, but I hope that never happens. I'm optimistic that things will get better, not worse and it sounds like things have gotten better for you and your son. I know there are some bigger problems, but some of the more persistent ones are improved and that gives me hope.

Thanks so much. Talk to you soon,

Thanks Amy & Renee! I'm feeling welcomed already. I have been reading the posts on this board and I'm so impressed by the insight, intelligence, empathy and acceptace. I think a lot of professionals could learn a lot by reading some of these posts! ;)

I'm a SAHM and I have made it my mission to help my DS any way I can. I've been having such a hard time with my son (Daniel), that I consequently came down with a medical condition: chronic daily migraine. It has taught me that I have GOT to get a grip and face the facts! I'm now in search of medication that can help me with the current pain and it has been a long road, but I'm starting to feel better, so I'm terribly excited.

Anyway, I'm going to go and read some more posts. I think I'm already addicted to this board!!!! ;)

Hello Irene and welcome,

I hope you find this place to be a "safe haven" away from some of the trials of everyday life.

My DS is almost 9, and we struggle less with behaviours now.

Hey Irene! Welcome and nice to meet you.

Behaviors are tough and I am sure many of us (I know I do) can relate to trying to rearrange and predict everything to avoid problems. They do start to learn skills (with teaching) to problem solve and advocate for themselves and their needs which helps with this alot. It gives them the responsibility and control for it rather than us revolving the world around them.

At least that is what we are working on here. It is a slow process but we have made LOADS of headway.
