I have a pretty long story with Brody ,it has been a rollercoaster. But after months of assesments, interviews, IQ and achievment testings we have answers to our loner, eccentric son and that was Asperger's . He also was diagnosed with General Anxiety Disorder, and probably ADHD,but the psychologist wants to get the Asperger's addressed at school and then reassessed for ADHD.
Apparently ADHD and Asperger's can resemble each other quite a bit.
Just 1 week after the DX the school already has an IEP plan for him. They couldn't put him on an IEP previously( despite all his social and learning troubles) becuase he scored to high onhis IQ and achievment. However his elementary already has Autism programs set up and they already saw something in Brody that raised red flags. So things are moving along and tomorrow Brody starts his " new kind of day" .That's how we've been preparing him.
PLaying video games has been a mixed blessing for us. It calms him down and is connection with boys his age.Otherwise Brody's interests is counting money(NOT spending it) shiny things and sea shells. He collects these things in great numbers. When he talks about these things kids his age are so disinterested and lose interst in playng with him. Brody doesn't notice ,yet, that others don't want to play with him.
I guess I don't have to explain anyhting here,do I ? I feel that's what I do so much of lately, trying to make people understand Asperger's and how it affects Brody socially.
After all these years of feeling all alone in these troubles with Brody it is amazing to me how accepting our family and freinds have been, I sent them articles on ASpergers, and they really see it now.
I just read Asperger's Syndrome by Tony Attwood, I called Brody's autobiography! Very useful. Brody's tteacher said she is going to read it ( IHOPE so, his teacher has just been frustrated by Brody since he walked through her doors).
I'm sure I'll learn all these abbreviations (ABA,for example)Thanks for Listening !

Welcome to our little corner of the net! No, you don't have to do all that explaining here. We "get it". Also, we offer giggles, camaraderie, support, and encourage venting. Check out the website, as it has a lot of 411 you may find useful.
I can't wait to get to know you and Brody better!
Sio

Hi Jessica, welcome to the board! :)
It certainly sounds like you'll fit in right nice here with us. I'm Candes in CA, I have 5 Aspies in my house, including my DH (dearest husband) and 80yo DGM (dearest grandmother). The others are my dd's (dearest daughters) who are 13, 9, and 4. I have 3 more dd's too, but they aren't on the Spectrum.
I hope you like chocolate! You'll be getting a lot of the cyber version offered to you (plus cookies, dark beers, red wines, etc). LOL
Oh, ABA stands for Alternative Behavioral Analysis. It's the leading therapy used for people on the autism spectrum. Don't worry, it takes time to learn the lingo, please don't feel bad about not knowing it. If you run into something you aren't familiar with just ask. That's one of the things we're here for. :)
Like Sio said, go ahead and check out our community website, there's even a page on board lingo, LOL. I need to update it some more, but what's there will help you get started so you don't feel quite so lost. if you ever have any questions you would rather keep private or comments on the website you can email me at drendrewolf@drendrewolf.org .
Feel free to jump into the conversation at time. Rant, rave, brag, or dump, don't hesitate! It's all good.
Again, welcome to the board. I look forward to getting to know you and Brody better.
Peace,
Brody will have an AIDE with him at recess, so now he can finally play outside again.Brody had been banned fromthe playground,Brody's biggest delay is his social skills.
He has the classic traits in every area, but socially he really stands out.
Brody will not be the class room during it's busy ,unstructured times, when Brody would always loose control and overreact, grab kids, lick kids, cause general choas.
He tells us his brain "forgets" to not touch kids. His teacher and principal have noticed that BRody is not malicious, just impulsive and gets carried away.
Brody hasn't yet been invited to one birthday party, nor have we ever had a 'friend's party' for him,he just doesn't like noise. I can't tell you how many Christmas's and family gatherings I spent alone in another room with him, hoping people didn't think he was the biggest brat to walk the Earth.
just a little insight into Brody,he really is the axis of our family. His extreme up and exetreme downs and quirky behaviors are just all in a days work.
i hope my baby had a good day at school finally...sniff sniff...Jessica
Today was Liam's first IEP day, too! I was just a wreck all day. Linnane, my 4 y/o daughter, was sick, so at least I had a lot of distractions. I also did all those things my DH has been bugging me to do, like call about getting our ducts cleaned and wash my van Even tho it is pouring down rain. I also did a lot of my work for my class (but need to do a lot more)! Now he is home and I feel so much better.
Liam had a fine day! He went to resource and he loved it. (First 50 min of the day). I think that was it for the IEP goals for a Tuesday! More will follow as the week/month unfolds, like OT, a lunch bunch, and a friendship group!!! Oh, I forgot, and Earobics for his CAPD! He'll get some visual charts as prompts and some modifications to his work like when he is supposed to be silently reading (and isn't). His work will be chunked (given one page at a time w/his teacher checking for comprehension after each page), or he'll be allowed to quietly read aloud;"whisper reading"?? Stuff like that. But the big change for today was going to resource.
Actually, I thought it would be OK. Liam loves change, so doing something "new" is always well received.
I sooo hope it was a great day for Brody, too! BTW, I LOVE that name!
Sio
But it souunds as though your school is offering more very specific programs > Brody's IEP goals are great and we're very happy with what thier working on, but I don't think they as many individualized style ctherapy groups or social skills groups as Liam's school. In rural Ohio I think we have it pretty good though.
We've been thrown through a loop with Brody's DX though. I'll explain in another post because I need some input on this,I am not happy.
Take Care,Jessica

I'm Amy, SAHM (stay-at-home mom) to Noah-6, Emma-4, Claire-3. My DH is Marc, who is truly the rock of our family!
Noah's Dx just got "upgraded" from PPD-NOS to Aspergers. He's as sweet of a child as a mom can ask for. Emma is our "non-affected" child...she's a dream. Helpful, kind, even tempered. Claire is still a question mark. She has major sensory integration issues, as well as significant speech/language issues. She's going to see a nuero-ped. in May, we know she's on the spectrum, but she's much more affected than Noah. After some "gentle nudging" we got the school district to find a spot for her in the school with the best early childhood program. (The school is generally designated for poverty stricken families, but thanks to the advice I got on this board, I was able to point out that our familial financial status can not legally be a factor in her placement.)
Here's hoping you feel as good about being a part of our group as I do.
Looking forward to sharing in your joys, sorrows, laughter, and love!
Amy
Who needs to ask her hubby to make another chocolate torte...I'm sure the group wouldn't mind if I pass one of those around. Would you ladies???
Just kidding!
Sio
WHERE'S MY TORTE?!?!?!
Amy
Who'd better be nice to DH, because not only is he feeling under the weather, so are all three of the kiddos!
Linny, my DD, has been having the time this season! She keeps getting pneumonia. I hope it is behind us!
