Newly DX Asperger's boy...

Hi there, I'm glad to find a board just for our kids! It's so nice to read post after post and I can really relate. I haven't been able to relate to anyone (parent-wise) since my 7 yr old son ,Brody was born.

I have a pretty long story with Brody ,it has been a rollercoaster. But after months of assesments, interviews, IQ and achievment testings we have answers to our loner, eccentric son and that was Asperger's . He also was diagnosed with General Anxiety Disorder, and probably ADHD,but the psychologist wants to get the Asperger's addressed at school and then reassessed for ADHD.

Apparently ADHD and Asperger's can resemble each other quite a bit.

Just 1 week after the DX the school already has an IEP plan for him. They couldn't put him on an IEP previously( despite all his social and learning troubles) becuase he scored to high onhis IQ and achievment. However his elementary already has Autism programs set up and they already saw something in Brody that raised red flags. So things are moving along and tomorrow Brody starts his " new kind of day" .That's how we've been preparing him.

PLaying video games has been a mixed blessing for us. It calms him down and is connection with boys his age.Otherwise Brody's interests is counting money(NOT spending it) shiny things and sea shells. He collects these things in great numbers. When he talks about these things kids his age are so disinterested and lose interst in playng with him. Brody doesn't notice ,yet, that others don't want to play with him.

I guess I don't have to explain anyhting here,do I ? I feel that's what I do so much of lately, trying to make people understand Asperger's and how it affects Brody socially.

After all these years of feeling all alone in these troubles with Brody it is amazing to me how accepting our family and freinds have been, I sent them articles on ASpergers, and they really see it now.

I just read Asperger's Syndrome by Tony Attwood, I called Brody's autobiography! Very useful. Brody's tteacher said she is going to read it ( IHOPE so, his teacher has just been frustrated by Brody since he walked through her doors).

I'm sure I'll learn all these abbreviations (ABA,for example)Thanks for Listening !
