A contestant in the Miss America pageant this weekend, Miss Montana Alexis Wineman, was diagnosed at the age 11 with PDD-NOS, and is excited to bring autism awareness into this arena that usually strives for perfection:

"Most people do not understand what autism is," says Wineman in her video entry for the Miss America online finalist competition. "And 1 in 88 people having some form of autism, this understanding is becoming more and more necessary." To that end, she has made her platform "Normal is Just a Dryer Setting: Living with Autism."

Wineman, who is the current Miss Montana, is both the youngest Miss America contestant this year and the first ever to have some form of autism.

You can read more about her at: http://shine.yahoo.com/beauty/miss-america-hopeful-autism-could-help-184500843.html

I have to say I love the title of her platform!  I also applaud her for having the courage to be open about her autism and the difficulties it causes in her life.  From what I'm reading about her it sounds like she is capable of performing the duties of Miss America, and hope that they give her the chance.

What do you think of her story?

Wow-what a truly wonderful story. I hope that her diagnosis is not held against her in any way. With so many people living with Autism these days-this woman's story will be an inspiration to many people.

I LOVE this!! Especially her platform title "Normal is just a dryer settng". I'm definitely going to be borrowing that line.

My son has the label of PDD-NOS (shame that this label will not even be around much longer!) so it's REALLY nice to see the added attention and publicity this contestant brings to the issue.
