Not sure what this can be??

Hello...My 5, almost 6 yr old DD doesn't seem to like her body. If she puts on her PJs in front of me, she tries to hide herself, esp her chest, as if she has something there.

In her upcoming dance recital, she had to wear 2 dresses, both with her legs showing, no tights. She told me she doesn't want anyone to see if her legs! Last summer, she wore shorts. I don't know where any of this is coming from. I have never said anything about her body. DD has commented to me that her legs are fat. She is not fat, perhaps has a little belly, thats it.

I think she may be a 'Sprirted Kids" she can be difficult at home and is very persistant when she wants something.

She doesn't seem to feel good about her body and I have noticed that her self esteem isn't great.

Any ideas on what I can do to improve her esteem and how she feels about her body??

Awww! I am so sorry your beautiful little girl is already body-conscious and feels bad about herself! Children can get this idea from other children. Also, distorted visions of "beauty" is pervasive in our culture and in our media everywhere we look! I used to teach at a school for bright children with special educational needs. One little girl (perhaps a year older than your girl) had been so affected by kids calling her fat and ugly at public school she quit eating. She was NOT fat nor ugly - she was gorgeous. They'd been calling her that to tease her but it had NOTHING to do with being fat or ugly - they'd been using it as an insult devoid of it's true meaning. A young child becoming anorexic?!!!???!!!!

Talk with the other parents of kids in her dance class and make sure none of the other girls are talking like this.

Oh wow Stacy! I hadn't even considered that the idea may have come from the teacher! It is true that Ballet is a field that can be very focused on body size. I saw a huge difference between the girls in Jazz type dance vs Ballet.
