I am new here. I have been a sped teacher for a long time, but recently had to resign in order to homeschool my daughter. Long story short, she has bipolar I with psychosis (it's quite prevalent on mine and her dad's sides) and has been hospitalized five times the last year. She has an amazing psychiatrist and talk therapist, but they tell me she is one of the most troubled kids they've seen. I was always the one handing tissues to parents in IEP meetings, and now I'm the one on the other side of the table. The biggest problem lately is that the atypical antipsychotics have caused her to gain a large amount of weight, and i had to remove her from ballet class, which she loves, due to lack of stamina. Yes the atypicals are necessary, as her hallucinations are dreadful, but now she is depressed because she is "fat". I am considering putting her on medifast shakes, her last labs showed borderline diabetes and elevated cholesterol. Any advice would be helpful. Thanks, Stacy

My daughter has a similar diagnosis.  She needs to take an anti-psychotoic as well as a mood stabilizer.  She also has struggled with a quick significant weight gain.  I wish I had an answer, but it's just heart breaking to watch them struggle, when you can't do anything about it.  The side effects are so bad, but the prospect of life without the medication is worse.

Thank you for your kind words. As moms we often blame ourselves, and I feel so powerless seeing my sweet girl suffer...

Hello Stacy. I don't have much to offer other than lots of (((HUGS))). You could seek out the advice of a nutritionist that could help get her back on track with both her weight and health. I would search one out that has experience with the meds she is on, I wonder if her doctors could suggest one?
