I was reading an article from Time where the auther talks about seeing t-shirts making fun of people with disabilities while on vacation.  She stopped in a store with her 10 yo son and saw a display of them.  She was so astounded that she didn't know what to do when a family of a DS child walked into the store.  While she regretted not taking immediate action herself with the store's management, she thanked the mom of the DS child for speaking up about it.

How do you handle situations like this?  Do you have discussions with your child about the cruelty of others?

It would depend on the circumstances, but likely I would say something. This story is one that makes me have a lot more faith in society! http://consumerist.com/2013/01/18/waiter-praised-for-refusing-to-serve-family-who-insults-child-with-down-syndrome/

That is a great story, Missy.  I heard about it recently and was really pleased at all the responses the story was receiving around the country.

We don't talk much about it yet, as Braska doesn't undertand alot about that. Except that we talk often with both of the girls about being nice to everyone, no matter if they're different or not. And we discuss that God made us all just like he wanted us, so it's not nice to make fun of anyone.
