Evaluation experience?

Could anyone please tell me about your family's experiences of the process of evaluation of your child for early intervention. Did you initiate the process or was your child referred by a child care provider, pediatrician, or teacher? How did you feel when you heard of the idea of your infant/toddler possibly needing to being evaluated?

I had an Early Childhood Intervention evaluation 4 years ago for my sensory kid. It was initiated with the help of my ped but really just by us as parents bringing up concerns about development that was not normal for our kids. The eval we had at that time showed very marginal deficits in ability so we waited to see what time would bring. When my sensory kid started Head Start this year we voiced our concerns and they kept a watch on her and suggested that we bring the subject back up to the ped. We brought it up in October and thanks to the great special services support staff and a very caring ped we were seen by a neurologist in January and referred by him to a program just for kids. We were evaluated by them in February and started therapy in late February and have been going once a week since then. I feel that you are the best advocate for your child so if you have a child who you feel may have deficit in an area bring it up to your ped or another doctor.

Thank you for your response. I am really struggling with how to talk with a family I have in Early Head Start. My observations and screenings on their child have indicated some concerns but the family is reluctant. I want to support them in becoming advocates for their child the way you did. From the parent perspective what advice to you have for me in approaching a conversation. This is my first year as a lead and I want to be supportive of the family. I have talked with my supervisors but I really feel I need to understand the parent perspective in this case. I am concerned about the child as well and what it will be like for him to go through the evaluation process. It sounds like you had supportive interactions with the HS staff. We have only done screenings and the parents are wanting to wait and see. I feel like a more formal assessment is needed. After the first evaluation what was it like making the decision to wait and see? Did you have reservations? I don't want to bombard you with questions but understanding what the emotional responses of a parent in this situation is something I am not experienced with. What was your perception of the more recent evaluation? How did it affect you and your family? What was your sense of your sons experience during the evaluation? I appreciate your time and willingness to share your experience.
