Food Dyes...

PJ has been getting out of control lately, I am sure a lot has to do with the baby! But I have been noticing some foods send him flying through the roof nearly! Has anyone noticed any problems with food coloring? I have narrowed it down to him having a problem with the yellow #5 and I think Red #40 might be an issue too. Just curious if anyone had any input on this! TIA!

Yes Shana, and those are the two most common culprits.

Thanks Rachel. I had to cut those fruit chews out too and those were PJ's FAVORITE! Today I cut the vitamin that has dyes and his allergy med and WOW... I am noticing a difference and he has only been up two hours. I will check on the others you mentioned. I also WATER down juice I will try the white grape. Thanks! I agree you can get lost in this stuff and wind up eating nothing LOL!

I didn't think I had any thing to say to your post. I haven't through too much about food dyes with Marissa (although I need to have her tested for food allergies, can they test for food dye sensitivities?). But I did work at a camp for kids with learning disabilities one summer. I had 3 boys with severe ADHD in my group of 7-8 year olds. One couldn't have any artificial food dyes. This boy had a lot of issues, but once another counselor gave him a blue ice pop. Oh my did I see a downward spiral in his behavior! So I do totally believe these can cause a problem. Maybe I should think about this more with Marissa!

You know Michele, I never thought much about it until I noticed Olivia's behavior spiral downward every time after she had the fruit chews.

I am new here, but I just started restricting my sons diet and so your post caught my eye. Food dyes are made from crude oil (so I am learning). I did some reading at Feingold.org about this. Many people have noted that removing articifial color and preservatives can improve behavior. I didn't buy a Feingold membership, but I have started buying all our food at Whole Foods (a store that only sells food that is without anything artificial, not necessairly the same thing as organic). I am seeing improvement, I think.

I also did reading on RBST which is a growth hormone given to some dairy cows since 1994 (makes cows produce more milk - but it also results in more illness (mastisis) to the cows, resulting in more antibiotic to the cow). It is banned in Canada and Europe, but legal here, due to big business who got their way with the FDA. Anyway, you can buy RBST-free milk at most health stores (not the same as organic, but organic is certianly RBST-free). I am just learning that there is so much articifial in a typical American diet and no one really knows the impact of all of it together. This food does cost a little more, but it is one thing I can do now, rather than wander about later. It also pales in comparison to the price of private therapy. I think it is worth a try.
