Colleen, sounds like a good appt. I have background questions for you. Has Maddy had an IEP before? What will you be requesting? A psych eval? Every state is different so i'll be interested to see how they procede with it in NY. It sounds like you have found someone good (luckily!). I am also a "get on with it" type of person. When I made a decision I want it done, right then, lol. What else is he going to do with Maddy? any ideas?
We tried a counselor with Marissa. What a disaster! She didn't understand sensory issues at all and went totally behavioral. I got some good ideas from her but I just recently blew her off (I feel guilty about it though). Oh, and I posted under your other post and it never made it there. I think I am too impatient with this preview and then post thing, I loved parentsplace when I was tcc but left after they changed the format, so I am still getting used to it.Michele
I am like you I want answers like yesterday if possible, but you know taking it slow is better.
I'm so happy for your family! It sounds like the appt. went well. G/L with the IEP. I hope it makes a big difference at school. You know Gabriel seems to suffer from anxiety too(and he is almost four). Let me know how it goes and what you all decide to do differently. I hope Gabriel's appt. goes just as well.
Well, Maddy has a 504 plan -- we developed that 1/2 way through Kindergarten -- it had very simplistic things on it -- preferential seating, felt under papers, OT services..
this year we've added more to it -- eye to eye contact, repeated instructions, more time on tests & quizzes--
We've been going back & forth about the necessity of the IEP, yet because the climate from the administration is negative (oh, I can get into this at length but the overall tone was our OT was written up for the amount of contact she was having with us as a family-I'll do a separate post about this issue) we sort of feel forced to move on with the process. Now I just need to get my brain on & write that letter.
In terms of the psychologist I'm not sure what methods he'll be using with/for her-I plan on asking what a typical session will be like -- I'm not very patient & do want to see measured progress.. (again, bitchy Mom) I have no problem finding another professional but do find the task a bit daunting since it took this long!! (3 months) to land someone that understands SPD..
you know, I've read somewhere that as our kids get *older* in practices the focus does shift to behavioral for that piece of the pie starts to demand more attention..
the book, "The Explosive Child" is where I read that -- what a great book!
I'm sorry that you had a therapist that wasn't useful for you -- there is nothing like having all the pieces fall into place (which rarely happens around here).............
keep plugging, you'll find someone!!!!
