Hi all! I'm Emily, mom to Galete, almost 4, and Eli, 18 months. Eli definitely has SPD and is in Early Intervention. I saw red flags as early as five months but by 15 months it was clear. He's doing great with OT, though he still doesn't sleep much and can be a real handful (though what toddler boy isn't, to some extent?). With Galete, the only signs we ever saw were poor sleeping and slow gross motor development. Her preschool teacher suggested we have her evaluated for the gross motor and we got an eval that doesn't say SPD, but clearly points to some sensory issues. She has vestibular issues and is exceedingly tentative on playground equipment, sucks her fingers and chews on things like clothes and toys, and often seems to know what to do but refuses to do it. I saw another poster mention her DS putting up a wall. That's exactly what she did -- she shuts down from criticism and if she can't do it well, she refuses to do it at all. But she doesn't have any of the more classic SPD signs like my DS -- he gets overwhelmed in crowds, has monster separation anxiety, doesn't like to be touched on his head but bangs it, etc. Anyway, she'll be doing OT this summer and EI continues for my little guy through next April. So that's us! Hope to stop by sometimes as we navigate raising our two super kids.
