Hello Everyone,
My name is Tara and I haven't been on these boards since I was pregnant with my second son 4 years ago! I remember what a great resource this community was. Anyway, my oldest son is 5, almost 6 and the past year has been really difficult for us with him. It seems that no one else see's the side of him that freaks out about socks being on just so, the food on his plate being arranged perfectly, the toothpaste on his toothbrush being in just the right place, how he can't do a simple task like getting dressed without loosing focus...etc, I could go on and on. He's always seemed ahead of the game developmentally (walked at 10mo., early talker, potty trained at 2 1/2). He's in Kindergarten and academically ahead of his class in every area as well. He's got a ton of friends and is socially very well adapt. I feel in my heart though that something just isn't right, what 5 year old throws a drop down fit because he didn't get the right cup, I've talked to his teacher and she hasn't seen any issues. Who can I talk to about this? I'm mentally exhausted and walk on pin and needles around him hoping that something small won't set him off into a 30 minute fit.

Any direction would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!
Tara

Hi Tara welcome to the board. First has he been seen by an OT? That could be a great place to start. It sounds like there could be some senwory issues going on that should be looked at. I have found many SPD kids are very very smart children who learn quickly they just are also very picky about having things just so. You could ask the school about having an OT do a sensory profile, but some schools will not and then it is on the parents to get the dx themselves. ((HUGS)) I know it is difficult and just remember we are here to talk to any time.
