My ds just turned 8. I have been saying he has sensory issues since at least age 2. We have been to 3 different counselors and 2 psychiatrists. He has alot of things going on psychologicaly. Every time I mentioned SID they would just say OT handles that. Yes I knew that but getting anyone to refer was a problem.
He runs into things purposely, use to crawl into things when baby, tags, socks, and he sleeps on boards and needs to be wrapped tightly. He can not get an oz. of anything sticky on him anywhere. If it sticks its out of the question, no mud, finger paints, well you all know. I was told by 1 counselor last year that school has to test if i ask. well my school had a few things to say and it certainly wasn't bending over bkwords to help in any way. His teachers this year just like last claim they see nothing along those lines, so that did not help.
I could't even get his ped. to agree to get an authorization for him last year. So this counselor which is spacy and doesnt listen I kept bringing it up and asking him until he said yeah OT would test and you could do that. So I tell my ped. how the counselor thinks its a good idea. So finally got the referral.
I loved the OT lady the first day. he indeed seek deep pressure, but she didnt touch the subject of textures. he tested about 2 years behind in fine motor, but she said that isnt that far behind. yeah well I can't read his writing and school just says he needs to slow down, its not fine motor, its his ADHD. But they said that bf i had proof to show them.
I asked at the end of the second session about textures, so the 3rd time she said he didnt react to anything. I said i dont mean moon sand, and dry beans, or silly putty, i mean if it sticks to him. So all she did was say, thats behaviorial, and heres papers to work on at home for fine motor, and heres papers to do at home for the deep pressure he is seeking. Like heavy work stuff. oh and no need to come bk. he really needs to be in counseling bc his sensory is behaviorial related. What? All the counselors we saw said we should talk to OT, and she says he needs counseling. He has been in and out of counseling since age 3, so 5 years now. So people are passing us around.
