Question about SID and axiety

Hi, I am new. I have a 7 year old with SID. He has been in OT for almost two years and we have seen a lot of improvement. He also attends social skills classes.

The main issue we are dealing with currently is anxiety. He has improved over the years, but is still so anxious and fearful, especially in social situations (i.e. school!). His teacher today asked me if he was on any meds. I really hope to avoid meds if possible. He takes some herbal supplements, but I am not sure how much they are helping.

I guess my question to all of you has two parts:

1. Have any of you had any success with any type of therapy for anxiety? I know each kiddo is different, but I welcome any suggestions or ideas.

2. If any of you live in the vicinity of south Orange County, Calif. do you have any recommendations for child psyschologists or LSCWs or therapists who deal with anxiety disorders.

Anyway, thanks a bunch!

Hi and welcome to the board. I do not live in CA. in fact I live on the opposite coast lol. I do have some input though. I have three children with SPD and only one suffers with anxiety it is my nine yo. He has gotten better with age and hasn't required any treatment however, I know that if it is interferring with a childs life and happiness it is something to look into. The thing is I have SPD and my anxiety has gotten worse over the years until I have at one point lived on xanax. I am off my meds now because of pregnancy, but all that anxiety is also back. I hope you can find the right treatment for your child and he becomes less anxious. What I can recommend is talking to him and assuring him that all is fine until you can get everything sorted out. I HTH ((HUGS))

our daughter is almost 4 and has suffered from severe anxiety pretty much from birth. this past summer we decided to go the route of meds and boy has it made a difference. she/we have a life now we can go places and experience things. I know drugs arent for everyone so i would never push it, as i clearly remember how hard the decision was for us, but its made her life sooo much better. still not perfect but much much better!!

good luck!
