sleep (or lack thereof)

Has anyone had luck with sleep training? My DS is almost 20 months. I really don't mind waking up to nurse him once or twice a night, as I did for my DD until she was about 2. But my typical night with DS is more like this:
In bed between 7:15 and 7:30.
Wakes at 8, rub his back to go back to sleep.
Wakes between 9 and 10, sometimes more than once, nurse back to sleep.
Wakes between 10:30 and 12, take into bed. Cosleep with 0 to 2 more nursings until 5.
Sits up at 5, I basically pull him down and make him nurse so I can at least lie down. He switches sides every few minutes until my DD comes in and totally wakes us up, between 5:45 and 6.
Needless to say, I'm exhausted! We have tried a CD that's supposedly made for sensory kids that starts loud and ends up softer and slower. He's usually up before it's over. Tonight I tried a lavender aromatherapy mist and he was up within 45 minutes. I've gone out (on rare occasion, LOL) so he can't nurse to sleep, but it hasn't mattered. I have tried No Cry Sleep Solution, no luck. The one thing that's helped a little is putting him on the mattress on the floor, but sometimes he will calmly get up and look for me and other times he will just sit up crying hysterically until I get him.
Obviously people who don't understand SID suggest Ferber or similar, but they were horrible and didn't work with my DD, and my DS is way more sensitive than she is. He has never been able to calm himself down and I know he'll totally panic. So I thought maybe I would ask here, where there are no doubt others whose kids have little ability to self soothe! Thanks. : )
