This month has not stopped being a huge month for my son. All of a sudden he's able to get his face wet. He's been in swim since last October & still could not get his face into the water.

This is how he continued to be at the start of August. Now on August 24 he is jumping into the pool, swallowing water, recovering, then jumping back in & today .... he swam half the width of the pool by himself (several times)!

I don't know how to say this w/o sounding rude, but he looks like a 'normal' kid out there now. He doesn't have this irrationality orbiting his self. He looks like he's ready to learn how to swim.

I guess that is why his instructor is moving him up a half level :)

I sat in the bathroom stall & let the tears out. Tears of joy, tears of relief, tears of the long 8 years of getting my boy's face wet.

In less than a month:

~ Ride a bicycle on 2 wheels
~ Tie his shoes (sort of)
~ Try foods at a restaurant (fears gagging in public)
~ Level in swim!

I'm in total awe.

The speed will come with time.

So the threat of taking his flip-flops & loafers away was what it took. I told him he had to be able to tie his own shoes, well enough to leave the house, by Monday or I will lock those other shoes up. LOL, this was said 2 days ago & for 2 days he's tied his shoes well enough to leave the house (not w/o complaint) but hey, closer :)

She starts on the 7th, right?

Oh....she's far from speedy! We still have to work on speed and efficiency but she has the basic concept down! That's much better than last spring.

Celebrate the small steps and pretty soon you're well into the journey!

He made level 2-1/2, I have the proof now! I have the report card. I'm so excited for him!

... as for tie laces, I'd say it's a sort of. We're still working on it. He CAN do it & HAS done it, but appears he purposefully makes them flop at last moment then hits himself in the head calling himself stupid. To make it worse his sister (going into K) is now tying her own shoes.

Not sure if he started to do this b/c DD started to tie her shoes or if I rushed him one day or what? But we went backwards a bit.

But it's my goal to get him to do it quickly before day 1 of school. I'm not giving up even if I have to lock up her flip-flops & loafers to get there.

But it's GREAT NEWS for your DD. How nice! It's a confidence builder too. Get those boosts in & I think other things just start to work.

Keep believing in her, this is such a fun time.

That is just awesome! I'm so excited for you and your family!

I'll have you know that you inspired me yesterday. We had been avoiding shoes with laces because it was just too frustrating for Natalie. But her PT said she needs better support than velcro shoes can provide and you mentioned your son all of a sudden being able to tie his shoes. We went shopping yesterday and bought two pairs of shoes with laces. We got home and I showed her once how to tie them (the last time we tried there was snow on the ground!) And guess what...three tries later and she had it down! I couldn't believe it!

I think you touched on something in one of your earlier posts - there is something magical about the age of 7-8. Things are clicking for our kiddos and I'm so excited! I'm also excited to have someone to share it with!
