SPD clothing issues: HELP!

My 8yo son has SPD (sensory seeker) and was just diagnosed with ADHD combined type. Getting dressed in the morning has lately been a nightmare. He will only wear sweatpants and a limited number of long-sleeved t-shirts (with his favorite characters). He likes his clothing to feel "tight". He will have me tie his sweatpants super-tight. I think we've reached the point of washing things so often that they are getting looser and worn out. Bribes used to work for him to get him to wear something new, but they no longer do.

I have been told by the psychologist and OT not to "push" the clothing issue. However, it feels like it is getting worse! His difficulty with clothing is severly limiting what he is able to do. He can't play outside in the winter because he won't wear socks and boots, only rubber Crocs without socks! He won't go sledding or skating or any of the other wonderful activities I associate with being an 8 year-old child! I'm at my wits' end.

Does anyone have advice on dealing with this? By not addressing it, I feel like we are allowing it to get out of control.

I'm sorry that you are dealing with this it can be so frustrating! As hard as it is to do, you just have to take it slow and work on getting him used to different textures and feelings. Have you told the OT that he's getting worse about his clothing? I understand that his SPD limits his ability to do certain things, but continue to work with him and be patient. It might take some time before he's willing to explore his world more.
