First timer

I have a 3 year old son with Down syndrome. He attends "regular" preschool and is becoming extremely interested in potty training bec the other children are doing it (his biggest motivator). The problem, with his low muscle tone it makes it more difficult for him to always feel when he needs to go. We have been successful in going potty; however, not on a regular basis. Anyone have/had the same difficulties and have any words of wisdom for me? He is my only child, so this is ALL new to me. What works best? Should I do the timer technique and go every XX minutes? Any advice would be great!

Been there done that!!! My daughter was potty trained at four, she has cp and has difficulty in controlling her muscles. What we did, which worked beautifully, was for two weeks we checked her diapers every hour, and charted at what times she was wet, had a BM, or was dry. Then after that two weeks we had an idea of when the usual bathroom times would be. So of course we took her to the bathroom at those times when success was likely, somehow the feeling grew on her and she started recognizing it (hopefully that would work in your case). But even to this day we keep her, somewhat, on a schedule (due to her muscle control). SHe has to go to the bathroom directly after breakfast, when she gets to school she is asked at recess time if she needs to go (never do you WANT to go...because she doesn't want to go she WANTS to play...KWIM?!), she is allowed to say no, but if she does then after eating lunch she has to go. If she says yes at recess she can decline at lunch. Like I said she knows the feeling now and we probably COULD stop the schedule, but it's better safe than sorry. HOpe this helps a little.
