Hello everyone

I have an 8 year old son who we've been going through evaluations with for about a year now. He's been on a track to be diagnosed with AD/HD at school since he started 1st grade. Dealing with the school department has been frustrating to say the least. It took a whole school year and half of the next just to get them to agree to test him, because he wasn't failing in school despite his difficulties. I resisted the AD/HD diagnosis, even though he largely fits the profile, because I just knew that if we gave it that name, everyone would stop looking for what else it might be.

So, short story long, we finally did take him to a pediatric neurologist (not the one the school recommended) who reviewed his testing, interviewed me and my son, and did a couple tests with him. She says the school has missed the boat and what he has is Nonverbal Learning Disability. In her opinion, the distractibility/fidgetiness is the result of processing difficulties rather than the other way around. She noted the scatter in his subtests that are indicative of NLD.

Thing is, that like with the ADD possibility, my son doesn't really fit the NLD profile completely either. I think the school is going to reject this diagnosis and say the distractibility caused the scatter in his testing. I'm SO not looking forward to school starting again.

Do any of you have experience with NLD?
