Help!! I am about to meet my boyfriend's son! I am a mother of two girls. I am very blessed that they have no disabilities. I need advice on how to interact with a child with mental disabilities!! Thank you!!

WHy not just say HI and let him come to you. Try and act natural. There is no surefire method of interaction. Just be friendly, smile and let him know that you are happy to meet him...it should flow from there. Do you know some things he likes, airplanes, books, whatever? If so maybe you can get him to talk to you about those things, or you can bring him a small gift of a toy he will like. It's more about being at ease, and accepting his level of interaction. My DD doesn't have mental disabilities hers are all physical, but severe enough that people always assume (on first meeting) that she has mental conditions as well. I just quietly tell them her communications methods and that she is developing typically in mental areas. AFter the initial shock that she does "talk" and can understand they fall into a normal mode of interaction I'm sure your boyfriend will be with you? He should be able to help you ease into a relationship with his son. Are you nervous to tell him that you are worried about the meeting? Most parents will be happy to "coach" you for the first meeting...all you have to tell him is that you haven't been in contact with children with special needs and so would like to know what to expect. Good Luck, be yourself and relax things will work out.
