High School IEP?

Tomorrow I have my daughters first High School IEP meeting. Even though school does not start until the end of August they like to have IEP meetings early in the summer so the kids can met with their special education teacher. My question is would it be ok if my 13-year-old daughter went with me to her IEP meeting or would she just get bored sitting there? She took choir last year in the middle school and she loved her choir teacher and she wants to take choir again with the same choir teacher. (The high school and middle school are connected). Also the last day of school her used to be middle school special education teacher suggested that she take adapted physical education. What is adapted physical education? She never before needed adapted physical education and all the sudden they are suggesting that she could benefit from it! The middle school special education teacher said that it would be an excellent choice for me to tell the high school special education teacher that I want her to have adapted physical education due to the severity of her asthma. I am a little unsure of what adapted physical education is and what they would do to my daughter. Also what is adapted Home EC? I saw that on the schools site that they have it for children in grades 9-12 in special education. If you have any ideas or suggestions I would greatly love to hear from you. I will post tomorrow after her IEP meeting is over. Thanks!

By all means, take your dd! She will be expected to participate in these meetings at age 14 as she will then need to start having a Transistion Plan as part of her IEP. I would notify the district that she will be attending the meeting, if she is, simply to allow them the curtisy of having enough chairs, copies, etc. for her as well.

As to adapted phys ed, I'm not sure what to tell you. This is usually just accomodations made for a student in phys ed. From what you write, it sounds like they have a special ed phys ed class. You could call and ask prior to the meeting in order to be prepared for this part of it.

Good luck!
