How can you tell if a newborn can't hear

My dd's 2 week well child visit was yesterday, and the doctor kept asking if she could hear - was I SURE she could hear? Did she respond to specific sounds? Am I positive she's hearing? I must have said something that caused her to ask so many questions, but I'm not sure what. Or maybe she noticed something? At the time I said YEAH of course she can hear! But now I realize I didn't have a good reason to think that, and I have noticed a couple of things that made me wonder at different times over the past couple of weeks. First, either the day we came home from the hospital or the day after, the baby was drowsy and falling asleep and my older dd brought out a box of musical instruments and started making a ton of noise. And I got angry and told her to stop or she'd keep the baby from falling asleep. But the baby didn't stir at all, either from the noise or from me yelling. And the other thing is that I noticed a few times that noises have never caused her startle reflex, and I'm sure they did with dd #1. She is a remarkably quiet baby - she almost never cries and even almost never fusses. But that could just be a personality thing.

She passed the newborn hearing screening at the hospital. They put little headphones on her ears and sticky things on her head to see if she could hear noises. She got 100% in both ears. I guess that's why I assumed she could hear fine. Are those ever wrong?

If she has hearing problems, I can handle it. I just would want to know early so she could get whatever help she needs. We have a friend whose dd was diagnosed right in the hospital and got hearing aids immediately as a baby, and she's doing great and speaks great and everything, despite pretty serious hearing impairment. I'd hope to catch it very early like that.------
