I need some help here.
Hi Maria, My kids are not old enough for school yet, but I was a teacher before SAHM and a reading specialist. I don't know what interests ds or his age, if you give me a few more details I can better help you. But here are some ideas anyway. I'm sure its stuff you've already thought about, but here goes:
Take him to the library/book store and let him choose his own books.
What is he interested in? Cars? Animals? Star Wars? Whatever, find books on a topic he likes.
Read to him. No matter how old he is. Find a chapter book you could read together.
Read with him. For example, you read a page, then he reads a page. Alternate.
Reward him. Make a daily reading log with a sticker chart or something. If he reads 15 minutes a day all week, he gets a reward. (Trip to the dollar store, special lunch with mom, whatever works.)
Find alternative things to read. What I mean is maybe he doesn't like books so much. (Try comic books, newspaper, kids science magazine, poetry, etc.)
Record his reading. Get an old tape recorder and let him record himself reading. Then he can play it back and listen to himself.
Books on tape.
Libraries usually have summer reading programs. He could get involved in that. They usually have rewards and other fun stuff to do over the summer.
Start a book club in your neighborhood ro see if your local library or book store has one for kids.
I think the biggest thing is finding things he's interested in. Let me know if I can help in any other way. Good luck!
