Ok, I *think* my computer is working again. I can have more than one window open and push the backspace button without everything shutting down on me. I don't know if I can make it to chat tomorrow to actually test this out, LOL. DH and I were going to get the girls on thier buses tomorrow and have a nice, quiet Valentine's breakfast. (How's that for creativity, Jan? And it beats going on a "date" to the grocery store, LOL) But there is no school bus for Ruby, I posted on Steph's board and to save myself time and energy I'll just cut and paste. It looks like our breakfast may turn into dinner after they're in bed, which is fine because I couldn't make it to the grocery store to get breakfast. Things are so hectic, I'm breaking down and shelling out the $5 to have the delivered!!
Anyways, here's what I posted on Steph's board:
"Head Start has always provided transportation to and from school for all the kids. Until this year when the driver quit, they hired a replacement that worked all of 3 days, had a bunch of subs, then a temporary driver, then rehired another driver that quit a few weeks earlier, then she quits or gets fired along with the bus aide and a few other bus staff, then back to no driver and no bus, often with no notice, old bus drivers filling in, and then some guy. Have no idea who this guy is, but he seems nice enough. Are you confused yet? Imagine waiting for your child's bus and not having any idea who is driving it, who the aide is and will there be a bus tomorrow. This has even happened after school, there's no bus to bring the kids home and they don't call the parents and tell us.
Last week they sent home a note saying they will not provide busing for all kids anymore. Fill out this form for all adults in your home, where they work, how many hours, which days, etc. We'll find out who gets to ride the bus soon.
I didn't send Ruby to school today because she has pinkeye. I ran into another parent taking his son to head start, there was no bus today and they didn't call anyone. I would have been standing downstairs for nothing - again. I called Ruby's teachers, there is no bus all week, they don't know when there will be a bus again and didn't I already know that? "Well, no. Nobody called and told me this, so no I don't".
The issues this has created - working parents are missing time to get thier kids to and from daycare and head start, city bus riders (like me) are spending too much time and money getting our kids to and from school, and our kids are all missing tons of days when we can't/won't take them ourselves. Which brings me to my main question. (Yes, I have a point in all my complaining, LOL). What about our sped kiddos and them not recieving services when they miss head start? Can I tell them they are denying Ruby a FAPE? It's not just Ruby, all the other sped kiddo's too, but I can only talk about Ruby. I could put her back in the Early Intervention class, but I thought Head Start was better for her and EI obviously ins't her LRE. Maybe I could arrange for special needs transportation (those drivers contract through the city)to take her to and from school every day?
We just want our kids to ride the school bus like they are supposed to, and we want them to get thier special services. And IMHO, I think not having the bus and not getting the kids to school due to transportation or scheduling issues sets a horrible example for them, especially the 5yo's going to kindy next year.
What can the parents as a whole do or say to find out what's really happening with the school bus (either somebody quit, or it's funding, or they don't know - they can't keep thier story straight from day to day so they must be hiding something) and what can I do or say to get Ruby to and from school every day. I don't mind taking her sometimes, but it's 30 minutes there, 30 minutes waiting for the bus to come back, 15 minutes home, 30 minutes back to the school, 30 minutes waiting, 15 minutes home. Of course it's cold, some days I just can't justify taking her out at all.
Thanks for letting me complain, LOL, and a big thanks to the powers that be for letting my computer work long enough to post this. Any advice is appreciated :)"
Hopefully my computer stays working long enough for me to come back and post an update!
