low vision and kindergarten

Hi, My 5 yo daughter has low vision with her right eye, blind in the left. (Optic nerve atropy, can't be corrected, but won't get worse.) She was doing great in pre-school but has been having major problems with kindergarten. I think she's having problems since she depends on hearing more, and in the louder class room, is having problems filtering out sounds.

has anyone had experience with dealing with this, or just problems with special needs kids in kindergarten?

thanks, Kathrin

Kathrin,

Welcome to the board.

I am sorry, I have no experience with this, although my instinct says to check out a smaller class size. Does your daughter have an IEP? What do her teachers suggest?

Thanks for your help! Yes, she does have a 504 plan, and is supposed to be seeing the vision therapist weekly. I think he's trying to help in some ways: wants to change the computor settings, etc, but she needs help functioning in class.

the good news is her teacher is responsive, and willing to listen to me. At the conference today she hadn't realized how much the noise was affecting Alexandra. So we'll see what happens next.
