Even though sleep disorders can affect your child's development, behavior, etc., a recent study found that very few pediatricians are trained in diagnosing them:

One of my special needs children was disabled by sleep problems, yet it took until she was sixteen for a GP to start fresh with her and say, "gee - no one has ever suggested a sleep study before?" Nope. No one ever had even though she'd had sleep issues since infancy. I have wondered ever since how many other medical issues might have been avoided if we'd been able to address the sleep issues early on, since sleep is indeed critical to physical health, which of course, includes the functioning of the BRAIN (I hate calling it "mental" health when the brain is an organ just like any other!)
