(I am posting this on a couple of the boards, so apologies if you have already read it).

I had looked through my town and school district literature for summer camp or activities for special needs kids. I didn't find anything. Well another mom told me about a program which is run by the town. I followed up on her lead, and discovered gold:

A daily (10 am-3pm), six week summer camp for special needs kids, right in my town! The kids go swimming every day in the town pool (heavily supervised) and take a field trip once a week. I couldn't believe that I hadn't heard of this program from anyone except this one

Glad you found such a great camp for your child. My son attends a 6 week special needs camp too. Does your school have extended school year eligibility? Our school district pays for the 6 weeks of camp because of that. I'm not sure if all school districts do this, if it's because of ADA or what. The criteria is that the child will regress during the summer months if not in a scructured setting. Hope you're pleased with your find.

We have yet to have our IEP meeting, so I don't know what summer services the school has to offer (we had summer services last year, so the district does offer *some*). I am hoping they can offer *something* because even though I am delighted with my "find" of this camp; it is a recreational activity, not an educational one, and regression is a definite concern.

I will let you know in a couple of weeks...

I totally forgot I posted on this board, and so long ago! My son attends a special needs camp for children with mental retardation. They don't have the facilities for physical disabilities. It was started about 15 years ago by a local church and is wonderful. It is "camp" fun for the summer with OT/PT done on a imited basis. They put in a new pool two years ago and it is located on about 5 acres of land that has a pond, garden and room for outdoor activities. Age limit is from 6 to 21. From 6 to 17 they are in camp. From 18 to 21 they go to an Explorer's group which does community based trips and teaches them more about functioning in the "outside world". The school district provides 6 weeks of extended school year for children who will "regress" over the summer months. I guess there should be more academics, but the routine and interaction with the other kids helps just as much. My son has been in "school" since he was 2 1/2 yrs of age, so I totally approve of summer "down time". He is now done with that camp but will attend a week of overnight camp run by our local Easter Seals. Again, not much academics, but the experience is wonderful. He came back like a new child the first year of attending this one. The first time he'd been away (other than with family) for that long a time.

I've found that word of mouth from other parent's is my best resource. You would be surprised what is out there.

Hope everyone's summer went well...now onward to school and graduation !!! Yikes, I can't believe he's in 12th grade this year.
