Talking about sex. drugs, terrorism, etc

I'm wondering what you all tell your kids about important issues, like the facts of life, etc. For example, Sammy was 4yo on 9/11. She saw replays of the towers falling on the news constantly. I told her some bad guys were angry and crashed their planes into some really tall buildings, lots of people got hurt and died. And the facts of life - ugh! She knows that babies come from thier mommy's. That they have eggs inside that turn into babies; the baby stays inside the mom's uterus until it's ready to be born. All she knows about the menstrual cycle is that sometimes I use pads or tampons, she will too when she gets older. She turned 7 in Aug, so I'm not in any real rush to set her straight. However, I've noticed my oversimplified versions just don't satisfy her anymore. Like with drugs. How do you explain drugs to any kid, let alone one with cognitive delays. I think I confused her into thinking you can go to jail for taking medicine. I do feel a sense of urgency talking about puberty, because I was completely unprepared when I started my period at 10yo. She's starting to show signs of "pre-puberty" - rounder hips, body odor, sudden concern with her apperance, etc. I would like her to be prepared before she "needs" to be, KWIM? Is it harder explaining these things to special needs kids or am I just completely and utterly paranoid?

Thanks! On a funny note, both the girls are on medicine for strep. I guess Sammy was feeling ornery because she told ydd "Uh, oh. You're taking medicine - I'm calling America's Most Wanted and you'll go to jail and I'll get all your toys. HA HA!" To be young again!
