Forcing Deaf Boy to Change Name Sign!

I just can't get over this story, and hope that the school district realizes how bad this decision is:

The Grand Island (Neb.) school district is forcing a 3-year-old deaf boy to change the way he signs his name, because they say his gestures violate their weapons policy. Preschooler Hunter Spanjer's personalized name sign is a registered sign with Signing Exact English -- a modified form of American Sign Language -- and involves extended index fingers that the district says resembles a gun.

I think that people can realize that he's not making a gun gesture!  What do you think of the school district's decision?

I just read another article that provides a bit more detail, here is a link to it: http://www.1011now.com/home/headlines/Grand-Island-Preschooler-Forbidden-Sign-Language-for-His-Own-Name-167394325.html

That is totally insane! I really hope that the parents of this district stand up for the little boy, it does sound like outside forces are getting involved. I'd like to know who brought this to the school board's attention, probably some ignorant parent who is worried their precious child might be bullied into joining a gang by a classmate :smileywink: This district should be ashamed of themselves!

I've heard of other idiot things like this happening with regards to zero tolerance policies. It's going to beyond absurd.

This is just insane. Common sense has to play a role in these zero tolerance policies. (and it seems like often times it doesn't). It seems to me that they aren't even considering the child and his ability to communicate- which is the real shame here.
