Early Hearing Detection and Intervention

Rep. Lois Capps (D-CA), Rep. Jim Walsh (R-NY) and 23 other members of Congress yesterday introduced legislation (H.R. 1198) to reauthorize the Early Hearing Detection and Intervention program on February 27, 2007. The bill was referred to the House Committee on Energy and Commerce.

AG Bell, along with the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Alliance, will participate in a Capitol Hill day on March 12 to promote the reauthorization of the legislation and appropriations under the 2008 federal budget for Early Hearing Detection and Intervention programs. The 2008 budget submitted by President Bush to Congress eliminates funding for Universal Newborn Hearing Screening programs.
