Personal FM system for home

My ds has a personal fm system at school which is something that makes his learning experience much easier.
I was considering one for home. He has difficulty understanding the tv sometimes and is unable to understand anyone on the phone. He's 8 and definitely needs to start learning phone etiquette as well as being able to speak to friends.
Does anyone use a personal fm at home? Any input is greatly appreciated

I was unaware that it "could" be required for home. Homework right now is not a problem but I don't know if school would ever require a child to watch tv for homework...LOL.

That is very true, but since the original question had to do with watching television, I didn't even think about that. Thanks for posting that.
Most kids don't need an FM for paper and pencil work or even when communicating with one parent. However, there may be instances when a student who is deaf or hard-of-hearing needs an FM in the home for academic/educational purposes.
Thank you, I will look into it again. Fortunately Mike likes clothes almost too much. It is hard to get a coat off him in hot weather but he is getting better. I have another question for you but it is better in a new thread.

In your class do you ever have kids with high functioning autism type stuff and auditory problems? Does this work for them?
We had started with the audiologist stuff and then other issues became more important (anxiety and behavior) so we kind of dropped it but since his triennial is this fall and he is doing well again, we will be looking into that again. They had consulted an audiologist at one point who had recomended not using the FM trainer for some reason. I can't remember why but she never met Mike, I think it was more due to his diagnosis than him in particular which is why I thought there was something with ASD kids.

thanks for explaining the FM and for your advice. DS's teacher has used it when they were watching t.v. and placed the mic next to the speaker.

@rbear -- FM systems filter out background noise and increase the student's access to the teacher's voice (or whoever has the microphone). If your son has APD, you should discuss options with the educational audiologist.\
Also, if you want, go to www.phonak.com and do a search for FM systems and Auditory Processing Disorder. I pulled up several articles that might help you in your decision.
@gina -- In school, when we watched videos or something, I always put the FM microphone next to the television. People can and do use them outside of school/meeting situations. Before purchasing one, you may want to see if you can borrow your child's FM for a test run.

No but it sounds like a great idea.
My son does turn on the closed captions for the TV and that does seem to help him alot. Our phone issues are tough too but he has social language issues as well as not being able to process what is being said.
How does the personal fm system work for him? Does it filter out other sounds, make voices louder? I have been considering asking the school for it again but Mike is sensitive to some things and so we haven't. I need to get back on it though.
