hi
i belong to the feb 07 playgroup. my dd, allison, was born 2/7/07. she was diagnosed with torticollis at birth and is now in pt to help strengthen her neck and face muscles. the pt is also concerned for her hearing. can anyone here tell me or point me to a web link that lists developmental signs for speech and hearing that dh and i can be looking for? we'll be talking to the pedi, but wanted to start getting a handle on what to look for. thx in advance, melissa

maria
thanks for your reply and the info you posted for me.

i dont know if they did a hearing screening at birth or not, and we do not have any family history of hearing loss that we know about. but at pt (for torticollis, which involves neck and facial muscle issues), the therapist made finger snapping noises all around her head and she did not turn her head or blink her eyes. he looked up at me and said he was concerned if she can hear. i have seen her get startled from a loud noise, but i can't say for sure it was the noise that caused her to startle, b/c in many cases there was vibration as well that could have caused her to startle. this is why i asked about infant hearing and speaking development - so we will know what to look for in the coming months. i read some other posts on this board and it seems universal that the earlier you catch hearing loss, the better off the child is - right? i also saw the post about the 3 1/2 mo old who is wearing ha already. if my dd has a hearing issue, i want to know what to do for her.

do you (or anyone else reading this post) know what to look for in a 3 month old so you have an idea if they can hear or not? and when to seek professional help? thanks -melissa

Melissa....if you and the pt are already questioning hearing loss, this is time to have her checked out!!! She will have impedance testing done, sound field testing in a sound proof both, and if deemed necessary...an ABR will be scheduled (but only if hearing loss is suspected).
