As I mentioned in the June Check-in post, we recently had Jesse's evaluation and ARD at the school district.


What they used to determine (in their minds, at least) that he does not have CAS is this checklist:

The school SLP got this checklist when she went to a mini-seminar given by this Kay Giesecke at the state convention earlier this year.

I have seen that checklist before. So, my daughter Sydney has been diagnosed with both CAS and severe Phono disorder, and it is possible to have both. Her CAS presents itself in more of the "oral". SHe has difficulty with the motor planning, and it takes tons of practice for her to "learn" a speech sound. It took 1 year of therapy for her to be able to get her lips together to make "m, P, b", and now she can say them with prompting 90%, but in her natural speech she still reverts back to her easy sounds sometimes.

hrmm...


Well, if it were me..I would do one of two things. Either, go with the therapy offered and see how he does..perhpas he will progress just fine...and if not you call always call for another IEP and state lack of progress with the current plan.


OR


demand 1:1 ST, and get yourself an IEP advocate if the the district is refusing, And begin the fight! Obviously I don't have much experience with this as the district has always given us what we wanted, although sometimes we have had to push them a little. But some of the others moms are more experienced with this sort of thing..or perhaps the IEP board on ivillage.


I think it is ridiculous for a district to say they cannot provide 1:1 ST!
