help?!?!

I need help with potty training! Adelaide will be 3 in November. I'm getting a lot of comments about training her but trying which I do on random days (yesterday was one of those days) is not going well at all.

She doesn't stay dry for 2 hours at a time. She doesn't seem to know she is about to go. She gags violently when she sees her own stools.

She did poop on the potty once and gagged really bad, I expected that but now she won't try. She has never peed on the potty.  She has in fact peed just after I take her off.  Usually she says "uh oh wet" after she pees on the carpet or th esofa on the days that we try big girl pants with a timer, having her sit on the potty every 15 min.

Is she not ready (they wouldn't except that if it were preschool would they?). What really works from real moms?

I want to be done with diapers soon for her but I don't want to mess her up and then have a worse fight on my hands by doing it wrong and freaking her out.

Help????

Just wanted to add that we just got Killian potty trained within the last month (he'll be 3 on Nov 12). It was super frustrating at first, because he would just pee as soon as I got him off the potty. I started putting him on the potty every 20 minutes for like 2 days, then every 30 minutes, etc. He caught on so well, he's completely trained now, except at night, and I'm sure he'd be able to sleep all night with no peeing, but I'm just not so keen on washing sheets and bedding every day! We also let him pick out his own undies, and that made him seriously motivated. Hope she catches on soon, being potty trained is so nice once they get the hang of it!

18 months?!?! That would be SO awesome LOL As it is my boys were starting to be pee trained during the day around 3 & poo between 3 & 4. Night trained can go quite a long time for some kids too- Sean still wears pull ups at night at age 7 because his bladder is too small & he sleeps too deeply. Hannah is 2.5 and with her speech problem is nowhere near ready to be potty trained. So I foresee diapers for quite awhile into my future LOL

The other ladies gave you great advice but wanted to chime in that 3years old is not the cut off :smileywink:

Glad to hear that 3 isn't the cut-off.  I really haven't even started working on potty-training with Leslie, and she's a month past 2.5 years old, has no medical conditions and no communication issues.  She's just not ready in other ways.  And you know what?  I'm fine with that.  I don't get why people feel the need to rush and look down on others who don't have trained kids by this age (ahem... MIL!!!!)  Anyway, as I said, I'm not getting many indications that Leslie is ready, and it's fine with me.  In fact, it's more than fine with me, because I'd rather not worry about timers, stickers, treats, cleaning up accidents, etc. come November when I'm also taking care of a newborn.  I think it'll be much easier on both of us if we don't really start until there's tons more indication that she's ready.  I really like this checklist:  http://www.babycenter.com/toilet-training-readiness-checklist-2-years. She still lacks many of these.

Wow, Ben was missing a bunch of those when we started, which might explain why the first 6 months of the year weren't consistent with training but he had a breakthrough at the start of the summer. I guess he was finally ready or most of the way there. :smileywink: And I'm just now able to leave the pulling-up of the pants to him rather than doing it myself.

I'm glad that I switched to pull-ups in January, even though he may not have been completely ready for the training part of things - it was just so much easier than strapping diapers around his abundant booty. :smileywink::smileywink:

There may be something here you can use as a potty chart

I'm getting discouraged again. She will happily sit on the potty. We keep reminding her and seh is happy to run to the potty and sit on it. She sees that as a reward in and of itself. But she has only made it to the potty once t actually pee, the one I told you about. She now holds her stools till she gets back in her diaper at night. We told her that she has to go on the potty even when she is wearing a diaper. ( We can just snap it looser and pull it down) We are only putting it on righ tbefore bed anyway. UGh. She is happy to clean up th efloor. That's pretty much her personality, compliant. She says "put the water in the potty" (not sure where she got that but it's fine with me). Is it normal for them to miss it every single time?

As soon as she pees (on the floor) she runs to the potty and sits on it to try.  So is this the next stage? Now that she knows how to get her pants up and down alone, and what is to go in the potty - Is this the next (and hardest step) to leard to feel the feeling and realize that pee is about to come? (that's my guess but I don't know if I'm right). This may be the hardest part of parenting so far. :smileytongue:

Jennifer, that's how I was thinking too, that I didn't care but as I think about it I don't want her to get comfortable with wet pants. And, cloth diapering with only 8 diapers is a lot of laundry. Rinsing diapers takes all day it's just really hard so if she can I'd like her to be finished with them. If we have another baby then I'll have to start over but I'm pretty discouraged  on that front.

Most kids don't like that feeling of wet or lumpy pants. Adelaide doesn't seem to care at all if she is in a diaper but if she is in panties she wants them off right away. she can so almost all of the things on that list with the exception that if she does it in a diaper she doesn't tell me.

I think I need lots of prayer. :smileyfrustrated:
