Finding the Right Church

We just moved to a different state 3 months ago. So we are in the process of finding a new church home right now.

Before we got married, DH was a Methodist and I was a Baptist. After we got married and I moved into his house (which was 2 hours from where I lived and worked), he was already a member of the FUMC there, so I joined the Methodist church with him. There was a HUGE falling out in that church--pastor had an affair with a choir member, etc, etc. It was a huge mess, and though it was no fault of the Methodist faith it left a bad taste in my mouth for Methodists because of the way the entire situation was handled. Shortly after that we moved away, visited several churches in our new city and fell in love with a Presbyterian church we visited. So we both joined the Presbyterian church and even had our DD baptized there.

Now we are in the same boat again of finding a new church. The Presbyterian church here is very small and doesn't have many young couples and even fewer children in it--so that is out. We have been visiting the First Baptist and the First United Methodist churches. Both are wonderful churches--lots of couples our age, lots of young children for our DD to grow up with, both have incredible preachers. We find ourselves leaning toward the Methodist church simply because most of the friends we have made here go there. It's my fault we haven't joined yet. I still can't get over how the above situation I explained was handled. I know it is all in my head, it's not the Methodists as a whole that were the root of the handling of the situation it was that ONE church. So, I just need some P &PTs that I can just let all that go and we can get on with our new church family that we have chosen!!! TIA!

Awe- Hugs! Praying for God's will in where you are to become members!

Church politics can stink when egos and personalities get in the way. We are all human but it's hard when a big situation like that tears at a church. Of course you feel a bit traumatized by that- it's natural. I pray for direction and peace for your family :)

You'll find the right church with God leading you. My advice is that (if you're anything like me) you just need to go and let the past be the past, try not to group this new church with the church that has left a bad taste in your mind. I have to constantly tell myself to just take a step a day, if it ends up being in the wrong direction I'll go the other direction.

I've been through the whole choir pastor having affair thing in my old church. And it also was not handled properly. By our pastor yes but, by some of the deacons and ALOT of the older church members, no. It was awful as I was a very young Christian (less than a year) single mom and all that good stuff. Our church split, the pastor left (the "bad" members were harrassing him and his family) but, life went on. Our pastor was eventually called to pastor the church that was formed due to this. He just last week resigned due to being called into the ministry of being Associate Director of Missions for our county. The old church just went through another split as their pastor was "kicked" out (long story). You can see the difference as to who has went on to flourish and who is still, well, in the midst of the devil in my opinion. I guess my point is as sad as it is, some things you just have to move on and move past. I still can't believe all that happened and that was 11 years ago. BTW, it was a Baptist church. Sorry this got so long. I do pray you move past the feelings you've been feeling and find the perfect church home.

I had to look up where you live--11 years ago did you live in Huntsville? My granparents lived there (my gram still does, my grandfather passed away). Anyway 10-11 years ago the same thing you described happened at their church--Willowbrook Baptist Church in Huntsville.

Anyway, a ROLL TIDE to you ;)

I have a meeting with the preacher of the Methodist church tomorrow morning!!! He called me today out of the blue and said I had been on his mind since we talked at church 2 weeks ago and asked if I could come in to talk to him. I told him I could come any morning as long as my DD could come. So he said "I'll see you in the morning". I just couldn't believe he called me like that--amazing how God works things out. Here I have been worrying about what to do and doing a lot of praying and here is my prayer answered!!!

Sorry it took me so long to get back to you. Things have been somewhat crazy here! Anyway, no I've never lived anywhere but here in South Alabama. I guess sadly, that just goes to show you this kind of stuff happens everywhere! I truly hope things work out for you and your family and you find a church home soon.
