Recently, I read a question posted where a person was wondering how to come out to her husband, who is a believer, as an atheist.  I found this article today with tips on how to come out as an atheist:  http://io9.com/5943285/so-youre-ready-to-come-out-as-an-atheist-heres-how-to-do-it

I think the tip about not posting it on Facebook first would be pretty obvious, but I guess in this day and age you never know!  How did you "come out" to your friends and family?

I've never come right out and told my mother that I'm an atheist. After college when I moved back home I told her that I didn't want to go to church anymore because I didn't believe in it but, I never uttered the word atheist. One of my brothers is an atheist so it was just said matter of factly to him. My other brother used to be a Scientologist but he too knows. I probably just mentioned it in passing to him.
I've never made a big pronouncement to anyone. Often if asked, I will just say I'm not religious. Although once, when I was young and frequented bars on the weekends, I told a guy who was hitting on me that I found annoying that I was an atheist because I knew it would offend him and it did and he walked away, just as I'd hoped he would. Since I never was a believer, I never had to come out to my family.  Though some extended family just assume I believe, unless they find out otherwise.  I don't usually talk about my beliefs unless the topic is about religion.  I have avoided telling my in-law's because I think they are annoyed enough that I'm liberal.  I don't need to add anything else to their list.
