I grew up in New Rochelle, NY, 40% of the population when I grew up there was Jewish and 40% Catholic, plus there were lots of kids from other countries who had parents working at the United Nations. I knew kids who were Hindu, Muslim, and Buddhist from other countries, plus I knew a few Jehovah Witnesses and Lutherans.

That is much different than how most of the country probably is. Sadly, it's more often the vile reactions to those that are different than the acceptance you grew up with.
