Apparently, I'm slacking in my children's spiritual education.  My dad was over last week and told DD that she needed some Jesus (I think he was joking), and DD (5) replied, "What's a Jesus?"  I admit, I'm not the best spiritual beacon.  It's no secret in my family that most days I'm more agnostic than anything else, but the look on his face was one of complete shock and disappointment.

Have your kids ever said anything to take aback religious family members?

She didn't say this in front of a religious family member but, it was funny nonetheless. A couple of years ago I took my younger daughter on many college visits. One of the schools we went to was a Catholic college. This school has brothers that live on campus in the dorms and they wear the tradtional robe and rope belt. We passed one while crossing one of the quads and my dd took one look at him and said to me "He looks like a Jedi."

My mom suggested to DS12  that he might have more of an interest in going to church if he was familiar with Bible stories.  DS politely told her that he preferred Greek or Norse mythology to Christian mythology.

LOL!  I agree.  Greek mythology has more interesting stories.  Did your mom handle his response OK?

I have a similar story also. Years ago at an Easter family gathering with my three brothers and our assorted young-uns, my oldest brother -- a recent born again -- started talking about Jesus. The 2nd oldest brother's daughter, who was about five at the time, said "what's Jesus?", to which the youngest brother of the three said, "it's something you say when you stub your toe". While the rest of us laughed, my oldest brother got highly offended. Our two children have learned since then who Jesus was but it's not as anyone's personal savior, unless his example can save you from bad behavior and make you a better person during your time on earth.
