Is it customary to give a gift to the priest for baptism?

No it's not necessary/customary to give a gift directly to the priest. If there's a reason why you would like to do that it would be fine though. Instead of money however you might give him a gift certificate of some kind....perhaps to a restaurant in the area. Usually donations ARE given at the time of baptism, however these are donations to the church - not to the priest. A few parishes may be more specific with amount for this donation, though most as we do at our parish are happy to receive donations in any amount at the time of the baptism. We have a "baptism font fund" that baptism families usually earmark their contribution toward and we specifically tell them that the amount is totally up to them - all donations whatever amount are gratefully accepted. And we also make sure that they know that this donation is NOT payment for the sacrament of baptism.
