Saturday night we attended an annual Memorial Mass for one of my dh's uncles at a neighboring parish. That was followed by a surprise 90th birthday party for my dh's aunt. She

I am trying to think of what our Priest wears casually. Around the office he wears whatever.... I don't attend week day masses... maybe in the fall when I only have one child to bring... I have noticed that he has a number of different colored 'collar' shirts. He has a nice pink one actually... *grin*

I remember being the new one at my church, it wasn't that long ago. Our parish is very welcoming though. I still don't know many people, but they all know me!! *lol* Yesterday was the 100th Anniversary of the Diocese. We sang at the 9 am Mass, but there was a 'lunch' after the 11 am Mass that I went to. First off, Mass ran really late so I was in the Hall with a few of the ladies who were setting up and I didn't know them. Then when Mass ended, and people started to trickle in, I didn't know ANYONE! And the 11 am Mass, is the Mass I would attend most! Anyway, didn't stop people asking me if I was taking over the Music Ministry... *grin* I guess news travels fast!

I have rarely seen our priests in non-clerical dress.

Karen it's the same for me with both weekday morning Mass and Sunday Mass as far as knowing some people just by sight. Some mornings, one of the others might start mentioning someone else by name and I don't have a clue who they are until they tell me where the person usually sits LOL. And if you go to a different Sunday Mass than usual, it's like a whole other world LOL. Granted, I do know a lot of people there, having been there now for 30 years, but still I don't know EVERYONE!

Our current pastor (of two years next month) ALWAYS dresses with his collar and always "looks like a priest" when he's doing church things. The only time I ever remember him wearing anything else was the very first few days after he had arrived two years ago. My dh and I were leaving the church parking lot on a Saturday night around 8 pm after he picked me up from the Adoration chapel. And there was this "person" walking around whom I recognized as our new pastor wearing a red polo shirt and jeans ;-). We stopped and we talked with him for quite a while that night. One other time he was leaving in the morning on his day off and was dressed in regular clothes and was wearing his baseball cap which almost makes him unrecognizable at first (he's bald ;-)).

Our previous pastor used to wear button down shirts when just at the church office and also when he'd come out to eat with us. That's fine - most of the time he did wear his "clerics" around the church. We did however have an associate a few years back (who ended up leaving the priesthood after about six or seven years) who most of the time never wore his collar even on the weekends when he'd be down in the church hall having coffee/donuts with people. And in the summer time he'd wear shorts and boat shoes under his alb while celebrating Mass. That drove me nuts - the fact that he so often didn't dress like a priest, almost as if he didn't want to. I'm ok with them dressing casually "on their own time" and other casual sorts of situations, but other than that I want my priests to look like priests! That's one of the things I really like about my current pastor. Often on Sundays he even wears his black suit coat too.

I often see our priests (pastor and associates) dressed in street clothes. My kids and I once ran into one of our associates in Walgreens; he was wearing shorts and a t-shirt. He told my kids that he was wearing his "summer uniform". Our other associate walks for exercise and it's not uncommon to see him in his sweats and sneakers walking around town. Last week, our pastor stopped by Field Day in a golf shirt and khakis; it was his day off and he was on his way to play a round of golf, but wanted to drop by Field Day first. He often conducts meetings with his collar undone.

I do have to say, though that whenever any of them celebrate Mass, they are always in full clerics. That is unlike the priest at my mom's church who wears jeans, sneakers and a t-shirt under his vestments. In fact, I think I've seen him in clerics only once.

At my parish the priests are always in clerics, the pastel ones in summer, unless it is something really unusual.

My mom's pastor dresses without the collar when he's at social events. I've seen my pastor in a t-shirt at the parish picnic, but usually he wears a collar. Our old associate wore a cassock all the time.

We're getting a new, newly-ordained associate next month. The diocese has 6 new priests, which is the largest class in 17 years.

I don't think there are set rules about how a priest should dress... other than (imho) he should dress like a priest when he's doing priestly duties so that folks know for certain who he is......

We have a Sister in our parish and last month during the women's yard sale she arrived to do shopping and I was amazed at the large number of women (all whom have been at the parish far longer than I) who had no clue who she was never mind that she was

I've seen both.

At parish festivals,I've seen a priest in casual, golf type attire but on more formal (?) occassions like having them over for dinner or at a church banquet,I've seen the collar.

The undercover nun!

Right now I am visiting my best friend from high school who entered the Poor Clares about 10 or 11 years ago.
