Today, they served the kids pepperoni pizza at school.

My son doesn't go to Catholic school, but our public school offers meat-free lunches every Friday of lent and on Ash Wednesday. I guess we just have a lot of Catholics in the area.

That's funny. Sounds like this is your first year at this particular school then? Maybe their reasoning is like Kellie suggested. Or maybe the cafeteria boss forgot it was Friday. ;-)

Well, I think they usually have a yogurt option, but the most of the kids don't go that route. I know Ian totally forgot it was Friday. I think they have a salad option too, but there is ham in it (prepackaged salads). It was only that first Friday where they had pepperoni on the pizzas.

Wow. Was that the only lunch option? I was in the (also Catholic) hospital for a week in February and was on a restricted meal plan - the only choice being meat and lunchmeat! I was surprised, but then again lent doesn't seem to be taken as seriously here in Germany as it was back in Texas/Louisiana.

It may be because of the age requirement (not requiring it until kids are 14--the latest I've heard, I've also heard 16). I didn't go to Catholic school until college, but during Lent there was no meat in the food line on Fridays. One person complained that she couldn't get bacon for breakfast. I explained that it was Lent and we were a Catholic school. She said not everyone going there was Catholic and the non Catholics shouldn't be "punished." I said either go to McDonald's, choose another school to go to or put up with it for the 6 or 7 Fridays of Lent. She didn't say anything after that.
